Stephen J. Foster, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst, author, and lecturer in private practice in Boulder, Colorado.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Sussex University, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Imperial College, London. He completed postdoctoral fellowships in biochemistry and toxicology at the University of Wisconsin, and in cancer research at Harvard University. He then went on to work as an environmental consultant in hazardous waste for over 28 years.

Dr. Foster became a Licensed Professional Counselor after earning a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Regis University, and in 2009 earned a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts.

He is currently a training analyst with the Boulder Seminar and is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. In 2011, his book, Risky Business: A Jungian View of Environmental Disasters & the Nature Archetype, was published by Inner City Books, and in 2015, he contributed the chapter “The Archetype of Waste” in Pythia Peay’s book, America on the Couch: Psychological Perspectives on American Politics & Culture.

Dr. Foster lectures widely on nature, alchemy, and the relationship between Jung and physicist Wolfgang Pauli. His interest in the images in the Tarot, in alchemy and the alchemical process led him to explore how they manifest in books, films, and art. He has written and presented on how certain films reflect the alchemical process and how alchemical transformation occurs within movies.
