Episode 60: Mark Saban

Mark Saban, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst and lecturer in private practice in Oxford, England.

He earned his undergraduate degree in classics from Pembroke College at the University of Oxford, and recently completed his Ph.D. in psychosocial and psychoanalytic studies at the University of Essex where his supervisors were noted Jungian scholars Roderick Main and Matt ffytche.

He worked for twenty years as a performer and writer in theatre, television, and film, appearing in the TV series The Les Dennis Laughter Show and Berkeley Square, and in the movies Privileged and Shakespeare in Love.

He later went on to train as a Jungian analyst with the Independent Group of Analytical Psychologists in London. He is currently a senior Jungian analyst registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy and the International Association for Analytical Psychology. He works as a lecturer in Jungian and post-Jungian studies in the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Essex in England.

In 2017, he was a panelist at the historic Who is My Jung? conference at the British Library in London. It was the first time all five London societies with IAAP accredited training programs came together.

Dr. Saban has published numerous papers and book chapters, and is co-editor of Analysis & Activism: Social & Political Contributions of Jungian Psychology along with fellow Jungian analysts Emilija Kiehl and Andrew Samuels. It was nominated for a Gradiva Award for Best Edited Book and was a finalist for the American Board and Academy of Psychoanalysis Book Prize.

His book chapters include “Ambiguating Jung” in How & Why We Still Read Jung: Personal & Professional Reflections, edited by Jean Kirsch & Murray Stein, and “Science Friction: Jung, Goethe & Scientific Objectivity” in Jung & the Question of Science, edited by Raya A. Jones.

‘Two Souls Alas’: Jung’s Two Personalities & the Making of Analytical Psychology, was the 2019 Zürich Lecture Series at the International School of Analytical Psychology. Based on his Ph.D. thesis, the book was published by Chiron in 2019. That book, and more, are the subjects of our talk today.
