Arthur Taylor Funkhouser is a Jungian analyst and instructor living and working in Bern, Switzerland.
Born in 1940 in Evansville, Indiana, he grew up in Oklahoma City and went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (known as MIT) where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1962. While in graduate school at the University of Michigan, he became involved with early work in coherent optics and holography and earned a master’s degree in science and engineering in 1967.
After working in research at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, and as an instructor at The Learning Community in Honolulu, and the Hellenic International School in Athens, he settled in Zürich and began training as a Jungian analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute.
During that time, he worked as a physicist at the Institute for Biomedical Technology, and at the Photographic Institute at the ETH (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich) where he completed his doctoral work, earning a Ph.D. in digital picture processing in 1979.
After working for a time as a programmer in the ETH’s astronomy department, he graduated with a Diploma in Analytical Psychology (the degree of a Jungian analyst) from the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich in 1981. His dissertation was on déjà vu and déjà rêvé, the subjects of this episode.
Since 1989, he has led a seminar in dreamwork at the Jung Institute Zürich – a lab course for analysts-in-training. He is an active member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and has led workshops in dreamwork in Australia, Switzerland and the United States. You can watch Dr. Funkhouser discuss his background, and how he works with dreams, in our previous interview in Episode 103.
Dr. Funkhouser is the originator and co-director of a research project into the effects of dream-telling, supported by two grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation. He has published over 50 scientific papers and a book chapter in the fields of holography, perimetry, dream research and on the déjà experience, which is the subject of our talk today.

SHOW NOTES
CORRECTION: I said there were no mentions of “déjà vu” in the Collected Works of C.G. Jung. A listener pointed out that my search produced erroneous results. So I ran the search again and found three instances: Jung mentions ‘the sentiment du déjà-vu’ in par. 974 of his essay “On Synchronicity” in Volume 8; he mentions ‘déjà vu’ in par. 640 of his essay “Answer to Job” in Volume 11; and he mentions ‘a sentiment du déjà vu’ in par. 456 of his essay “Symbols & the Interpretation of Dreams” in Volume 18.
