Episode 123: Robert Hinshaw

August 13, 2023 Laura London

Robert Hinshaw, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst and publisher in Einsiedeln, Switzerland.

After graduating with a degree in psychology from Northwestern University he spent a year backpacking through Europe before entering the training program at the original C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich. He worked for two years as a clinical psychotherapist at the Binswanger Psychiatric Clinic in Kreuzlingen and enrolled in the psychology program at the University of Zürich. In 1981, he completed his training as a Jungian analyst, graduating with a Diploma in Analytical Psychology, and in 1983, earned a doctorate in psychology from the University of Zürich.

While a student in Switzerland, he worked for many years alongside Murray Stein and others at James Hillman’s Spring House, where he helped publish the Spring Journal and early Jungian literature. When Hillman left Zürich in 1978, Dr. Hinshaw and some friends started their own own publishing house, Daimon Verlag. Their offices are now located in the picturesque town of Einsiedeln, Switzerland, directly across from the Benedictine Abbey that houses the Black Madonna.

For some 30 years he has worked as a training analyst, supervisor, and faculty member at the C.G. Jung Institute in Küsnacht and has served two stints as a Curatorium member. From 1995-2001 he was an officer of the IAAP and helped organize several of their congresses.

He has worked as a publisher for 45 years, publishing the work of Jungian analysts Marie-Louise von Franz, Liliane Frey-Rohn, Rivkah Kluger, and many, many others. He also publishes the yearly Eranos Yearbook and the IAAP Congress proceedings. Dr. Hinshaw is the editor of numerous books including The Rock Rabbit & the Rainbow (a Festschrift for Sir Laurens van der Post), Life Paints its Own Span (On the Significance of Spontaneous Pictures by Severely Ill Children by Susan Bach), and A Testament to the Wilderness (a Festschrift for C.A. Meier). Additionally, Dr. Hinshaw is the literary executor for Aniela Jaffé, which has made possible the new book just published by Daimon titled, Reflections on the Life & Dreams of C.G. Jung (also available from Baker & Taylor), the subject of our talk today.

Dr. Hinshaw works in private practice both remotely and in Zürich in the very building that housed the original C.G. Jung Institute and where the Psychology Club remains to this day. He also manages the publishing company, Daimon Verlag, from their offices in Einsiedeln, Switzerland.
