Episode 166: Laurence Hillman

Laurence Hillman, Ph.D., is an archetypal astrologer, leadership coach and consultant in Saint Louis, Missouri.

The son of world-renowned Jungian analyst and scholar James Hillman, who had studied with Jung, Laurence Hillman was born and raised in Zürich, Switzerland, and became immersed in archetypes at a very early age. He studied architecture at the ETH, earned a master’s degree in construction management from Washington University, and an MBA from Olin Business School. He later went on to study psychology, earning a Ph.D. in transformational leadership with the dissertation, “Reading the Yin Function in Male CEOs: Exploring the Efficacy of Archetypal Astrology.”

Now a professional archetypal coach, he specializes in helping clients uncover their deeper purpose and life calling, particularly in these challenging times. In his role as a consultant he helps leaders and organizations understand their archetypal patterns and advises on high-level decision-making. He is the co-creator of Archetypes at Work™, a cutting-edge methodology designed to assess and develop individuals and organizations so they can meet the future with clarity and resilience. His tools for mapping archetypes include archetypal astrology, for which he is recognized as one of the leading voices worldwide.

Dr. Hillman has lectured internationally and conducted workshops at the Globe Theatre in London, where he blended Shakespeare and astrology. At the Cycles & Symbols Conference in California, he presented Venus in America — co-created with his father, James Hillman. He has also taught at Jean Houston’s Mystery School, Pacifica Graduate Institute, and the Faculty of Astrological Studies at Oxford Summer School. He has been a repeated guest lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis and has led private study groups across the United States. He teaches introductory courses in practical archetypal astrology through Kosmos Institute, is on the faculty at Astrology University and Meridian University, is a registered Vistage speaker, and has facilitated programs within YPO. He has travelled extensively in more than 40 countries and is fluent in five languages.

He is the author of Planets in Play: How to Reimagine Your Life Through the Language of Astrology, and co-author of Alignments: How to Live in Harmony with the Universe, and Archetypes at Work: Evolving Your Story, One Character at a Time.

Last month, I attended Dr. Hillman’s presentation, Astrology and AI: Embracing Uranus Without Losing Your Soul, at the United Astrology Conference (UAC) here in Chicago. We cover a lot of that talk in this episode.

Great Year I despise Wikipedia links, but this was the best and most concise explanation of Plato’s term, “perfect year.”

Correction: When Dr. Hillman referred to Jung’s daughter, who was a practicing astrologer, he meant “Gret,” not “Emma.” You can read all about Gret (and Jung’s!) interest in astrology in Deirdre Bair’s book, Jung: A Biography.
