Episode 76: The Absent Father

Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst and clinical psychologist in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

She holds a master’s degree in social work from Boston University, and a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich. After completing her analytic training, she returned to the United States and obtained a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The Union Institute.

Dr. Schwartz has taught developing Jung groups for many years in Poland and South Africa with the International Association of Jungian Analysts, and has been a course instructor at both the Jung Institute and the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zürich.

She has presented her work at various congresses of the IAAP including “The ‘Dead Mother’ Effect on a Daughter” in Montreal in 2010, “Narcissism, Aging, Anima Mundi: Paradox & Necessity” in Kyoto in 2016, and “Narcissism: Psychological Oneness Excluding Love of the Other” in Vienna in 2019.

Dr. Schwartz has written several journal articles and book chapters on fathers and daughters, the puella archetype, and Sylvia Plath. In 2018, she was nominated for the Gradiva Award for Best Article by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis for “The Dead Father Effect on the Psyche of a Daughter—Sylvia Plath.”

She is the co-author of two books – Couples at the Crossroads: Five Steps to Finding Your Way Back to Love with Dr. Daniela Roher, and Aging & Becoming: A Reflective Enquiry with Susan Scott.

Her new book, The Absent Father Effect on Daughters: Father Desire, Father Wounds, will be released later this month and it is the subject of our talk today.
