Michael Escamilla, M.D. is a Jungian analyst and professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas.
He graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in general studies from Harvard University, and received his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School at the University of Texas. He then completed his internship and residency at the University of California San Francisco where he was an American Psychiatric Association fellow in psychiatric genetics. Dr. Escamilla later went on to train as a Jungian analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich where he earned a Diploma in Analytical Psychology in 2013.
Currently, he serves as department chair and professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine where his research focuses on the genetics of schizophrenia. He has conducted seminal studies in the genetics of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in Latino populations, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health for which he has served as an adviser on psychiatric genetics research.
Dr. Escamilla has worked to teach recovery-oriented psychiatric practice across the state of Texas and was the founding Director of the Center of Excellence in Neurosciences at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in El Paso.
In 2015, he was named the first McMillan Scholar at the Frank N. McMillan Jr. Institute for Jungian Studies at the Jung Center Houston. His role involves coordinating The Fay Lectures, editing their book series, and curating and creating content for their website, The Jung Page. He has published over 100 journal articles and is the author of the book, Bleuler, Jung, & the Creation of the Schizophrenias, published by Daimon Verlag in 2016. His work on Jung and neuroscience is included in the book, The Professional Practice of Jungian Coaching, and his chapter on football in the United States appears in Analytical Psychology of Football. Both books were published by Routledge and edited by Episode 98 guests John & Nada O’Brien.
