Returning to Speaking of Jung to discuss the launch of the new scholarly journal, Individuation—East and West, are Jungian psychoanalysts Murray Stein, Ph.D., in Zürich, Switzerland, and Professor Leslie Stein, J.D. in Sydney, Australia.
A JUNGIAN JOURNAL OF TRANSFORMATION
The aim of the new journal is to explore and advance the processes of psychological transformation, which relies on the organizing structure of the Self, by creating a dialogue between East and West on the theme of individuation. Jung’s understanding of the individuation process crystalized when he studied a translation of the Chinese Daoist text, The Secret of the Golden Flower, and his theory of the Self expanded through his study of the Hindu concept of the Atman.
Engaging East and West in further dialogue today can sharpen a lens to see the individuation process as both diverse culturally and universally archetypal, and to advance its goals with a deeper understanding of the wisdom in the interplay of civilizations that may contribute to the greater psychological and spiritual consciousness of individuals, cultures and humanity.
MURRAY STEIN, PH.D., FOUNDING EDITOR
Murray Stein, Ph.D., is a Jungian psychoanalyst, author, writer, lecturer and playwright who works as a supervising and training analyst at the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zürich, Switzerland.
He holds a Master of Divinity from Yale University and graduated as a Jungian psychoanalyst from the original C.G. Jung Institute in Zürich. He worked as a managing editor for James Hillman’s Spring Publications and later went on to co-found Chiron Publications with fellow Jungian analyst Dr. Nathan Schwartz-Salant (Ep. 26).
While establishing himself as a training analyst in Chicago, he attended the University of Chicago Divinity School and earned a Ph.D. in religion and psychological studies. He is a founding member of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago, was elected its first president, and served for five years as head of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts. He is a past president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and has traveled and lectured for them across the globe. Upon relocating to Switzerland, he became a training and supervising analyst for the International School of Analytical Psychology (ISAP Zürich), served as its president, and continues to chair its Zürich Lecture Series.
He is the author, co-author, editor, and co-editor of numerous books, articles, essays, and stage plays, all of which are listed on the special Murray Stein page in our Blog. In 2020, Chiron began publishing his Collected Writings, with the tenth volume released in December and Volume 11 currently in preparation. He continues to write plays with friend and fellow Jungian analyst Dr. Henry Abramovitch (Ep. 47 & 126), their most recent collaborations being Reading Room (Blue Salamandra Films, 2025) and Twilight at Bollingen (Chiron Publications, 2026). His most popular book, Jung’s Map of the Soul: An Introduction, published in 1998, has been translated into 13 languages. He has just written a companion volume, titled Jung’s Map of the Soul – Deeper Explorations, released by Chiron on May 18th, and was the subject of Episode 159.
This year, Dr. Stein will be delivering lectures to the Russian Jung Society on the psychology of immigration and immigrants, the Romanian Society of Jungian Analysts on the legacy of Jung for today and tomorrow, and the Jung Group in Belarus on The Book of Revelation, in addition to administering numerous online supervision sessions with students in Taiwan, China and Russia. He is currently working with editor Valerie Pollock on preparing for publication a three-volume series on his seminars for the Centro Mexicano C.G. Jung titled “On the Road with Jung: Confrontation, Relationship, Transformation.”
LESLIE STEIN, J.D., EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
He attended the State University of New York where he earned a degree in sociology and psychology, and played basketball, and then went on to law school in Toronto, later becoming a law professor and, for 10 years, served as a judge.
In the mid 1980s, he trained as a Jungian analyst in Australia and attended the C.G. Jung Institute of New York and started a private practice but left it behind to pursue his particular specialty of devising legal mechanisms to improve mental health in urban areas. He completed a master’s degree in law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and thereafter has been a professor at law schools and urban planning schools in Canada, the US, England, Australia, and India. He also practiced law as a senior trial attorney and was retained as a negotiator on complex commercial transactions in Russia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, and London.
He has written five books on how to make our decaying cities livable. This has resulted in him being sought out as a consultant to the United Nations and governments around the world on managing urban blight, homelessness, the effects of climate change, and the inclusion of mental health in strategic planning. His work on strategic planning for neighborhoods was given an award by the United States Congress of New Urbanism and he was, among other appointments, invited to be the Visiting Scholar at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University and Senior Fellow for four years at the Global Center for Environmental Legal Studies in New York. He is now a member of the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney.
It was on a trip to India for the UN on the urban planning of Varanasi that his interest in mysticism was awakened and he then returned full time to practice as an analyst, spending long months in India and enrolling at the C.G. Jung Institute in New York to refresh his work. Since then, he has written or edited six books on Jungian thought reflecting that interest, including, Working with Mystical Experiences in Psychoanalysis, The Self in Jungian Psychology, which was awarded the prize of Best Theoretical Book of 2022 by the International Association of Jungian Studies, Becoming Whole: Jung’s Equation for Realizing God, and his first novel The Journey of Adam Kadmon – all of which were discussed in Episode 113.
He is editor and contributor of Eastern Practices and Individuation: Essays by Jungian Analysts, co-editor with fellow Jungian analyst Lionel Corbett, M.D., of Psychedelics and Individuation: Essays By Jungian Analysts, co-editor with physicist Dean Rickles, Ph.D., of Varieties of Nothingness, and editor of a new book coming later this year titled, Integration of Psychedelic Experiences: Essays by Jungian Analysts, all published by Chiron.
His latest book, a novel titled The Psychoanalysis of Dr. Seele, the subject of Episode 143, was published last year by Arcade, the imprint that first published Samuel Beckett, Kurt Vonnegut, and Mo Yan who won the Nobel Prize. Professor Stein has just completed the third and final novel of his trilogy looking at the nature of individuation – Character: A Novel will be published later this year by Chiron and is the subject of our November episode.
