Episode 49: Jung's Red Book for Our Time

Jung’s Red Book for Our Time: Searching for Soul Under Postmodern Conditions is a multi-volume series from Chiron Publications. Volumes 1-3 are available now and two additional volumes are currently in production. Each edition is filled with essays by the world’s leading Jungian scholars, psychoanalysts, and psychotherapists.

This episode is a roundtable discussion with co-editors Murray Stein and Thomas Arzt, publisher Steven Buser, and distinguished author Lance Owens.

GUESTS

Murray Stein, Ph.D. earned a Master of Divinity from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Religion and Psychological Studies from the University of Chicago. He trained as a Jungian analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich and later co-founded the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago where he worked as a training analyst. He served as president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology as well as the International School of Analytical Psychology (ISAP Zürich) where he is currently a training and supervising analyst. Dr. Stein is the author of many books and articles including Jung’s Map of the Soul, In Midlife, and The Bible as Dream.

Thomas Arzt, Ph.D. earned a doctorate in physics from the University of Giessen and spent two years at Princeton University as a research assistant in atomic, nuclear, and plasma physics. He was trained and certified in the depth psychology-based Initiatic Therapy at the Dürckheim Existential Psychology Center in Todtmoos-Rütte, Germany and completed the certificate program at ISAP Zürich. Dr. Arzt has written extensively on the relationship between Wolfgang Pauli and Carl Jung, and is the editor of the German journal Studienreihe zur Analytischen Psychologie (Study Series in Analytical Psychology). He has been working for over thirty years as an Initiatic Therapist at the spiritual retreat center of Karlfried Graf Dürckheim in Germany’s Black Forest. Steven Buser, M.D. received his medical degree from Duke University and served for twelve years as a physician in the United States Air Force. He is a graduate of the clinical training program at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago and is co-founder of the Asheville Jung Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Dr. Buser had a private psychiatric practice for over twenty years and now works in the field of addiction medicine. He is the editor and publisher at Chiron Publications, and co-editor of the books, A Clear and Present Danger: Narcissism in the Era of President Trump, and Rocket Man: Nuclear Madness and the Mind of Donald Trump. He has been published in the New York Times, USA Today, and the New York Daily News, and has appeared on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.

Lance S. Owens, M.D. received his medical degree from Columbia University and completed post-doctoral training at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). He has been in clinical practice as a specialist in Emergency and Trauma Medicine for over thirty years and is currently an attending physician on the clinical faculty of the University of Utah. He is also an ordained Gnostic priest and the creator and managing editor of The Gnosis Archive, the primary internet archive of classical Gnostic sources, including the Nag Hammadi texts. Dr. Owens has published several historical studies focused on the intimate relationship between Jung’s collected writings and the visionary experiences recorded in the Red Book and the Black Book journals, and is a guest lecturer at the C.G. Jung Institute Zürich.
